Cost of Windshield Replacement Is Going Up

By on May 16, 2023
Auto Glass Replacement

Today, it seems as if the prices on just above everything (food, gas, rent) are going up–and glass is no exception. Unfortunately, maybe not all that surprisingly, the cost of automobile glass materials has been rising every month. . . and continues to do so.

In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Producer Price Index data pulled back in January 2022 showed that motor vehicle parts increased by 5.2 percent from the previous year. Specifically, adhesives and sealants increased in price by 14.2 percent, while prices for materials related to motor vehicle repair and maintenance increased by 2.9 percent.

Here’s a different perspective on the statistics: The average windshield replacement cost without insurance was $179 in the early 2000s. In 2007, that figure was more than $400 and has since continued to skyrocket.

What’s The Cause?

Myriad factors contribute to the increasing price of automobile glass, including:

  • The type of glass installed
  • Advanced driver assistance systems
  • Certain safety features
  • The addition of new moldings
  • Amount of adhesive required

Of course, the war with Ukraine and Russia hasn’t helped the issue, as material costs will only continue to go up while the supply chain continues to experience shortages. As a result, customers will notice a change in their service bills. It’s not ideal but expected. Automobile and glass repair shops can’t afford to offer the same rates anymore.

The windshield is one of the most important components of all vehicles. As such, if or when damage occurs, it can’t be ignored.

To potentially avoid windshield damage, the experts at Lucky Dog Auto Glass recommend the following tips, if applicable:

  • Take a less trafficked route
  • Keep your distance from other vehicles
  • Drive slower on roads with an excess amount of debris
  • When possible, avoid gravel
  • Stay out of the heat

If you do get a chip in your windshield, have it repaired immediately. Failing to do so could lead to the damage spreading, resulting in higher repair or replacement costs.
