With the first four months of 2023 behind us, automakers like General Motors have announced their Q1 2023 sales figures. For GMs, there’s a lot of good news. Sales for Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC are all up. As a whole, GM’s first-quarter sales in the US were up 17.6% compared to last year. Get past the good news you’ll notice something strange with the figures. GMC reported that it only delivered two Hummer EV Pickup trucks.
TFLtruck first spotted the odds earlier this month. It might seem like an April Fool’s joke, but automakers rarely kid around when it comes to car sales. The outlet points toward one very good reason for why GMC only delivered two Hummer EV trucks in the first quarter of the year – a stop-sale order.
Starting in late October 2022, GMC issued a stop-sale order for the Hummer EV Pickup because of improperly sealed battery packs. The issue that caused the stop-sale order was the possibility of water making its way into the truck’s high-voltage battery pack enclosure. If this happened, it could result in the vehicle losing power while being driven, failing to start, or warning messages being displayed on the dash.
A total of 735 Hummer EV Pickup trucks were affected by the recall. In order to ensure that options from the factory didn’t have the same issue, GMC issued a stop-sale order to fix the vehicles before they were delivered. Production of the Hummer EV Pickup started up again on January 30, 2023. So, GMC wasn’t building or delivering Hummer EV Pickups for roughly three months.
It’s a strange number in today’s world, but not abnormal for an all-new vehicle in its first model year on sale. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup is a highly complex vehicle. There are bound to be some teething issues. Hopefully, with the introduction of the Hummer EV SUV joining the Hummer EV lineup shortly, GMC has worked out all of the EV’s quirks.
