A recent webinar discussed how fleet managers can utilize connected data and AI-powered tools to ensure compliance and reduce risk. The panel of experts explored the differences between compliance and safety, and how to go beyond minimum requirements.
According to the report, the webinar featured Alison Moriarty, executive director – risk and operations at Beverley Bell, Jonathan Ramsey, senior manager, customer and solutions marketing (EMEA) at Samsara, and Kristopher Parkes, fleet manager at Speedy.
Changes to Tachograph Rules
The panellists highlighted the recent announcement of changes to the rules around tachographs, with Ramsey explaining that the threshold has dropped to 2.5 tonnes for vehicles doing international work. This change brings commercial vehicles, particularly vans, into the range for having a tachograph installed for the first time.
Ramsey noted that this change only affects customers on international journeys, and if a van doesn’t leave the UK, it still doesn’t have the tachograph requirement at the moment.

Blind Spots in Safety and Compliance
The conversation moved to discuss blind spots in safety and compliance, with Moriarty calling on fleets to look beyond driver behaviour. She explained that one of the biggest mistakes is not looking at safety and compliance holistically, considering factors such as vehicle maintenance and driver training.
Parkes added that drivers are under pressure constantly, and fleets need to speak to drivers, not just look at data and policy.
The role of technology in enabling better compliance for fleets was also highlighted, with Ramsey noting the benefits of driver-facing tools, such as overlaying weather and temperature alerts, and sending proactive alerts to drivers about remaining hydrated and taking breaks.
The Power of Data
The panellists emphasized the opportunities that data can enable for fleet decision-makers. Moriarty said that without data, fleets might have an idea of what’s going on, but data gives them the power to actually say what’s happening and what needs to be done.

Ramsey added that data becomes action when it’s something that can change something in the moment, not something that turns into a reflection in a report a month or two later. He noted that the goal is to gather more data, pull it into a platform, and share it with customers so they can turn it into insights that drive action.
