Subaru is launching special editions of its WRX and BRZ models to mark their 25th and 15th anniversaries, respectively. These 2027 models, unveiled at Boxerfest in Pennsylvania, feature cosmetic upgrades but no performance enhancements. The celebration also marks Subaru’s consistent offering of a U.S.-market WRX for 25 years, a stark contrast to the 1990s when enthusiasts longed for the JDM-only version.
The GD25 WRX and ZC15 BRZ take their names from the chassis codes of the original U.S.-debut models. Both are limited editions with manual transmissions only, reflecting Subaru’s commitment to engaging driving experiences.
WRX GD25: A Nod to Rally Heritage
The WRX GD25 stands out with its World Rally Blue paint, gold-colored 19-inch wheels, and gold Brembo calipers. Its most striking feature is a massive rear wing made of dry carbon fiber, reminiscent of Travis Pastrana’s American Rally Association race car. Additionally, the GD25 includes a front strut-tower brace and a retuned, stiffened suspension for improved tarmac handling, blending heritage with modern performance.
Under the hood, it retains the 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four engine, delivering 271 hp. The interior features microsuede-lined Recaro seats and an STI short shifter. Production is limited to 350 units, ensuring exclusivity for enthusiasts.
BRZ ZC15: Subtle Yet Distinctive
The BRZ ZC15 adopts a white exterior with matte bronze wheels and bronze Brembo brake calipers. It also includes door decals and additional under-hood bracing for enhanced rigidity. Like the WRX, it is manual-only and limited to 300 units, emphasizing its collector’s appeal.
Both models are expected to be priced similarly to their tS counterparts, with the WRX in the mid-$40,000 range and the BRZ just under $40,000. Subaru has not yet confirmed official pricing, but these estimates align with their premium features and limited availability.
A Legacy of Affordability
Despite the special editions’ higher costs, Subaru has maintained affordable base models. The 2002 WRX, priced at $24,520, would cost $44,995 today when adjusted for inflation—slightly above the current WRX tS. This highlights Subaru’s effort to balance performance with value over the years.
The base WRX starts at $32,995, offering the same 271 hp and a six-speed manual. This accessibility, combined with the U.S.’s vast gravel road network, shows Subaru’s commitment to performance value, making it a favorite among driving enthusiasts.
