Ford is recalling more than 3,000 vehicles in Canada because improperly manufactured engine parts could lead to a sudden loss of power while driving. The safety campaign covers 3,221 examples of the 2026-model-year Bronco, Bronco Sport, Explorer, Mustang, and Ranger equipped with the 1.5-litre or 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. In the United States, an additional 10,001 vehicles are affected by the same recall for the piston issue. The EcoBoost engine family utilizes turbocharging and direct fuel injection to deliver efficient power across a broad range of driving conditions, making it a popular choice for both utility and performance applications.

The piston defect

On affected vehicles, the domes of the pistons could fail due to a crater crack at the pistons’ nickel-resistant insert and aluminum interface, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The defect traces back to a loose nut on the piston supplier’s machining tool, the administration clarified. Should a piston crack, drivers would suddenly lose engine power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The nickel-resistant insert, also referred to as a Ni-Ring, sits within the piston dome and provides key heat resistance during the combustion cycle. This component is designed to withstand the extreme temperatures and pressures generated when the air-fuel mixture ignites, but the manufacturing error created a weak point at the interface between the insert and the aluminum piston body.

Ford has identified 38 instances of engines failing during end-of-line testing at its assembly plants. Another 13 possibly related failures have been reported in the field. The company said it has not yet connected any collisions or injuries to the defect. The end-of-line testing process at Ford’s manufacturing facilities subjects each completed engine to performance evaluations that monitor oil pressure, coolant circulation, and acoustic signatures that might indicate internal problems. These quality checks are designed to catch defects before vehicles reach customers.

What owners should do

Owners should watch for a Check Engine Light and listen for unusual engine noise or a misfire. The remedy involves inspecting the pistons and, if necessary, replacing the engine long-block. Transport Canada’s recall number is 2026-411, while Ford’s internal code is 26S61. Symptoms of a failing piston may include a rough-running engine, hesitation during acceleration, decreased power output, or an illuminated warning lamp on the dashboard. Unusual noises such as knocking, pinging, or irregular exhaust sounds can also indicate combustion irregularities.

This campaign is separate from a wiring problem that prompted a safety campaign covering 11,343 new Mustangs in Canada, which can also lead to engine failure. While both the piston defect and the wiring issue can result in engine failure, they affect entirely different systems within the vehicle. The wiring problem involves electrical components that can short circuit or lose connectivity, whereas the piston defect is a mechanical failure within the engine’s internal components.
