Stellantis announced it will divest its entire stake in the Free2Move car‑sharing business as part of a broader effort to concentrate on core vehicle manufacturing.

Sale to Mutares marks exit from mobility services

The automaker disclosed on July 28 that it has reached an agreement to sell its shareholding in Free2Move to Mutares SE & Co. The transaction, slated to close by the end of 2026, is subject to customary closing conditions.

Free2Move, launched in 2016 by the PSA Peugeot‑Citroën Group, originally aimed to serve as a platform for urban mobility and a potential gateway for the Peugeot brand into the United States. After the PSA‑Fiat Chrysler merger in 2021, the service expanded to include the Free2Move Charge brand, offering electric‑vehicle charging for Dodge, Jeep and Fiat models sold in the U.S.

Today the service operates in 14 cities across Europe and the United States, providing short‑ and long‑term free‑floating rentals that can be booked through a dedicated mobile app. The fleet is in the process of transitioning toward battery‑electric vehicles.

Strategic shift under the FaSTLAne 2030 plan

Stellantis said the divestiture aligns with its FaSTLAne 2030 plan, unveiled in May, which focuses on profitability of its core brands. The strategy includes a $70 billion investment aimed at strengthening the company’s primary automotive activities.

“By sharpening our focus on core automotive activities, we strengthen our capacity to deliver long‑term performance,” said Virgilio Cerutti, head of business development and partnerships at Stellantis. He added that the company is committed to a smooth transition for customers, partners and employees.

Mutares plans to create a new mobility platform, revamp management of the international fleet, continue the shift to electric vehicles and enhance the customer experience for municipalities seeking urban‑mobility solutions.

Free2Move’s original ambition to act as a market entry point for Peugeot in the U.S. never fully materialized. Instead, the brand’s presence in North America has been limited to a handful of electric‑vehicle offerings under the Dodge, Jeep and Fiat names.

Stellantis’s statement indicated that the company will work closely with all stakeholders throughout the process, aiming to preserve jobs where possible and honor existing service agreements.
