Google has added a new visual aid called Motion Dots to its latest Android update, aiming to ease motion sickness for passengers who use their phones while traveling.

How the feature works on Pixel devices

The option appears as two vertical columns of four dots on the left and right edges of the screen. When the phone remains still, the dots stay put; during acceleration, braking or a turn, the device’s accelerometers shift the dots up or down.

By providing a subtle visual cue that mirrors the vehicle’s motion, the system tries to align the brain’s visual input with the body’s sense of movement. The feature is currently limited to Pixel phones running Android 17.

Google’s documentation describes the dots as “a visual representation of motion that can help reduce the feeling of queasiness.” The implementation does not require additional hardware, relying on sensors already present in the handset.

Comparison with similar tools on other platforms

Apple devices also include a comparable option hidden within an accessibility menu. Users who enable it report being able to read or browse while seated in a moving vehicle without feeling ill.

Unlike the Android version, the Apple setting is not advertised prominently, and its activation process is considered more obscure. Both platforms, however, rely on the same principle of adding visual motion to counteract sensory mismatch.
