Mercedes-AMG unveiled its new GT SUV in Stuttgart on Saturday, introducing a high-performance electric SUV that shares its foundation with the brand’s 4-door Coupe but in a stretched configuration. The vehicle features three axial flux motors, one front, two rear, that deliver up to 1153 horsepower in the 63 model.

Performance and Powertrain

The motors draw power from an 800-volt battery pack equipped with liquid cooling, enabling aggressive sustained driving. This setup propels the SUV from 0-60 mph in 2.4 seconds, with sustained power output reaching 711 horsepower. Two battery options are available: a 106-kWh unit and a larger 128-kWh variant.

The larger battery supports DC fast charging up to 710 kW and provides approximately 434 miles of WLTP range. The smaller pack offers 363 miles and charges at up to 600 kW. Mercedes-AMG GT product manager Nadine Schütt emphasized that the SUV represents the first SUV developed entirely on the new AMG.EA architecture, marking a milestone for the brand.

Suspension and Design

The SUV incorporates AMG Active Ride Control+ suspension, featuring triple-stage adjustable air springs and hydraulics designed to minimize body roll and manage its 5700-pound weight. Schütt noted the system adds pitch stabilization alongside roll control, reducing front axle lift during acceleration and enhancing cornering precision.

Exterior styling mirrors the Coupe’s aggressive aero openings and active trunk spoiler, with the same triple-round taillights. The interior follows a similar layout, prioritizing driver-focused screen positioning via the new MB.OS software. Rear seats offer power recline and padded headrests, with the extended wheelbase providing noticeable additional legroom compared to the Coupe.

The vehicle simulates V-8 engine sounds and shifting, a nod to traditional AMG enthusiasts. Pricing for the base 53 model starts at approximately $127,000 in Europe, with the 55 and 63 variants scheduled for release in spring 2027.

This approach reflects a broader industry shift toward dedicated EV architectures rather than platform-sharing. By developing the SUV on its own AMG.EA system, Mercedes-AMG gains flexibility in packaging and performance tuning that would be constrained by retrofitting ICE platforms. The result is a vehicle that maintains the Coupe’s electric driving characteristics while offering SUV practicality, a balance that, if executed well, could redefine expectations for performance EVs.
