American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Rivian is set to enter the UK market as part of its European expansion plans. While the brand is relatively unknown in Britain, its upcoming models could challenge established players like Tesla, Volkswagen, and emerging Chinese EV makers.
Rivian is best known for its R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV, both designed with a focus on outdoor adventures and off-road capabilities. However, these models, tailored for the North American market, are not currently available in the UK.
Rivian’s European Strategy
The company’s founder and CEO, RJ Scaringe, has confirmed that the R2, a mid-size electric SUV, will lead Rivian’s European expansion. Unlike the larger R1 models, the R2 is specifically designed with European customers in mind.
Measuring 4.72 meters in length, the R2 is more compact than its American counterparts and competes directly with the Tesla Model Y. It offers practical features like fold-flat rear seats, a powered rear window, and a removable torch in the driver’s door.
Performance and Affordability
The R2 Performance model, already available in the US, boasts 656bhp and a 0-60mph time of 3.6 seconds.
While UK prices are yet to be announced, Rivian’s focus on both performance and affordability could make it a compelling option in the growing EV market.
The R3 and R3X: Compact and Exciting
Rivian’s R3 is a smaller crossover with a distinctive, boxy design reminiscent of classic European hatchbacks. It promises to be more compact and affordable than the R2 while retaining Rivian’s signature tech and adventure-focused personality.
The R3X, a performance variant, takes inspiration from rally cars, featuring a wider stance and a tri-motor drivetrain. Developed by Rivian’s Adventure Department, the R3X is expected to offer impressive on and off-road performance.
Rivian’s UK website is now live, accepting registrations for updates. However, strong demand in the US may delay the European launch until around 2028 or 2029, according to estimates.
Rivian is already expanding its manufacturing footprint, including breaking ground on a new factory in Georgia, which is expected to support its longer-term international expansion.
